The National Museum of History of Romania, in collaboration with Seneca Publishing House and the Society of Classical Studies in Romania, announces the opening of the Epictet exhibition. Pages: words and pictures. Through the visit, which brings together an interesting edition of the Handbook of the Epictetus (Vienna, 1799), translated from ancient Greek into Neo-Greek by the Greek-speaking scholar Dimitrios N. Darvaris (1757-1823), and the graphic expression reached by two contemporary artists, Anastasia Dumitrescu and Iulia Costache, illustrating the two volumes of the same philosopher published in new translations at Seneca Publishing House, Manualul (2015, translator Ioana Costa) and Diatribele (2018, translator Andreea Ștefan), brings to the public's attention an author who marked the thought European morality. The moment of encounter with the text takes place mediated, through interpretations, but also through eloquently contemporary images of artists. The austere presence of epigraphs and ancient statues in the Lapidarium Hall, which houses the exhibition, subtly reminds the visitor of the text's long past. The public thus goes through, symbolically, the process by which the reader has mastered over time the text, always transcribed, translated, "embodied" from one edition to another. The exhibition will be open at MNIR between May 8 and May 26, 2019, and can be visited from Wednesday to Sunday, between 10:00 and 18:00.

" There are, indeed, more effective and less risky drugs than those prescribed by psychiatrists. In our turn, with this book in hand, we can also proclaim, for the benefit of the neurotics around us (and of our own neuroses): "Epictetus, not antidepressants!" You will see that it works… ” Andrei Pleşu in the preface of the Manual
"The illustrations of this book seek to discreetly accompany the written text, they are fluid, airy and playful. I was looking for a line that was as simple as possible to join the text without literally illustrating it. There are 23 drawings that came from a breath, in a simple gesture of the hand that draws next to the word. " Anastasia Dumitrescu, illustrator of the volume Diatribe, Living Speech , Epictetus.
"I wanted to create the image of a student who takes notes from everything he hears, observes, as he can, in different periods of time and, yet, so similar. The apprentice becomes a teacher, or perhaps a mere passer-by, a listener. This exchange of roles is natural and largely depends on the resonance of Epictetus' words in each of us. The characters merge both with the paper that the Handbook brought with it, and with the power of the text to convey moralizing messages. ” Iulia Costache, illustrator of the volume The Handbook of Epictetus
